When I started my wedding photography business in Wilmington, I didn’t know anybody. I had to basically build my business from the ground up without any connections or business relationships. Thanks to the help of a couple networking groups, and some really nice people I’m well on my way to being an established wedding photographer in this awesome little beach town.
However, I had to do a lot of learning before I got to where I am. Moving to a new town is scary. Moving to a new town without a job is even scarier. I was desperate for business. I signed up for a service called Thumbtack, which pairs people in need of a service with the professionals that offer that service. Photography was one of those services. Unfortunately, everyone on Thumbtack wanted the cheapest photographer they could get. They didn’t care too much about the quality of the photographs, as long as they got the service done.
The purpose of this blog post is to educate. To open the eyes of all those brides out there who didn’t take the time to research their wedding photographer, and treated photography as an afterthought. Now there’s nothing wrong with a bride who doesn’t particularly care for images on her wedding day. If that is your position, more power to you! The rest of this article will serve to inform the bride that wants photography, but doesn’t realize how important this service can potentially be to her and her family.
In this intensely fast-paced world of ours, it is easy to forget about the future. Especially the distant future. How can we even begin to imagine what our lives will look like in 10-20 years when we’re barely able to keep up with this week’s schedule? We live in a society where modern conveniences have allowed us to do more than was ever possible in the history of the world! But if you stop and think about what photography really offers, you just might reconsider asking Uncle Eddie to shoot your wedding.
A photograph captures a single moment in time. You can never get that exact moment back. It is gone forever. But a photo gives you a chance to hold onto that moment for the rest of your life. When you think about photography this way, it becomes very powerful. We aren’t just guys and girls clicking a button, we’re artists capturing moments in time. Moments of the most important events of people’s lives. When you stumble upon your wedding album a decade later, do you want to look at a beautiful piece of art, or a picture snapped by an amateur?
A truly professional wedding photographer is constantly working to hone his craft. We are experts in shaping light to make you look your best. We understand composition theory and use it to make interesting images that you can’t look away from. The average person doesn’t understand the difference between a good photo and a great one. But we do. And we bring that knowledge to the table, and to every wedding we shoot. We understand the emotion behind these special events in a bride and groom’s life. And when we take a photograph, we are constantly asking ourselves “How can I show the emotion behind this moment?”.
All of this translates into images that are enjoyed by our clients for decades. What else in your life can you say that you keep for more than 30 years? At the end of the wedding day do you take home the food? Do you take home the DJ and the band? Do you begin to live in the venue and make it your home? No. You keep the images. We don’t shoot your wedding so you can share the pictures on Facebook the next day, and then forget about them. We work to tell the story of your special day, in the most beautiful way possible.
So the next time someone you know is getting married, please make sure they choose the best photographer they can afford.
