If we had a “Hey, I wish I had thought of that!” section, this idea would be in it.
Because that’s exactly what you’ll be thinking, and yes, it is that good.
If you’re not yet familiar with Pinterest, by the end of this post you’ll be happy we shared this tip with you while simultaneously cursing our name for introducing you to one of the best/worst time-wasters on the internet.
Pinterest works with a pretty straight forward concept. Users can share images, and others can save them to little collections, called boards. When you “pin” something, it means you’ve saved it to one of these boards. You can have boards dedicated to just about any topic you like; Pinterest is a ridiculously fun resource for getting ideas about fashion, crafts, recipes, home decorating, new kinds of clothing for your dog that your fiancé insists isn’t necessary… you get the idea.
It just so happens that it’s also a fantastic place to find wedding photography. Check out our Pinterest here.
So here’s our killer tip: set up a board on Pinterest and pack it to the rafters full of all the wedding photography you love. Then share it with your wedding photographer.
Are the gears beginning to turn yet?
Here’s a screenshot of one of my Pinterest boards, created for yellow color themed wedding inspiration!
By sharing a Pinterest board chock full of your favorite wedding photography, you’ll be able to help both you and your photographer in discovering the perfect style for your wedding day. In fact, any photographer that turns down this idea would have to be crazy – at Marcus Anthony Photography, we love it because it gives us an awesome visual representation of our client’s exact likes and dislikes.
Let’s go over a few tips to make the experience even more effective.
Don’t Be Afraid to Pin, Pin, Pin
It’s probably inevitable anyway, but don’t try to limit yourself to only the “perfect” pins. When you’re just starting the board you plan to share with your photographer, it’s OK to go a little wild. Later on, after your spree, you can always go through your picks and “unpin” the ones that don’t quite make the cut.
Remember that if you find a picture you especially love, you can click-through to the board of the user who pinned it. A lot of the time you’ll find mini-treasure-troves of photography from the same day, which can help give you ideas for similar pictures from different angles, environments, or lighting.
Sometimes you’ll find websites that let you pin directly to your account without even being on Pinterest. For example, you can pin any image from our portfolio.
Multiple Boards Are A-OK
Who says you only have to share one board with your photographer? While it’s best not to share five hundred with them, two or three differently “themed” boards are perfectly fine. Depending on where your wedding is going to take place, you may want a board for indoor photography and one for outdoor photography.
Here’s a screenshot of a group of boards I created with my own photography, categorized by color and theme.
Remember, your wedding photographer will likely also be taking pictures of the other people at your wedding too. So pin away if you see any family photos or group shots that catch your eye.
Ask Questions and Communicate
Never, ever be afraid to ask questions.
“Is this possible?” or “What would we need to do to get a photograph like this?” are all perfectly reasonable questions to ask your photographer about specific pictures you’ve found.
He or she should be able to tell you exactly what needs to be done to get the perfect photos on your special day… as they should! These are photographs that your children’s children’s children might see someday, so it’s totally reasonable to want them to be as close to perfect as possible.
Final Considerations
Whether you decide to use Pinterest or not, the main takeaway here is to use whatever tools you have at your disposal to enhance communication with your wedding photographer. Our communication skills are already pretty fantastic here at Marcus Anthony Photography, but we love to learn as much as we can about our client’s preferences.
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Get pinning!
